RRC Polytech graduate, Tom Thordarson, has built a successful career in Indigenous banking. As a Senior Relationship Manager at RBC, he specializes in Indigenous Markets, serving clients in Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario.

A proud graduate of the College, Thordarson attributes his success to his education in the two-year Business Administration diploma program at RRC Polytech, which is offered at campuses across Manitoba, including the Interlake and Peguis-Fisher River Campus.

“One of the things that was really good in Business Administration was the second-year entrepreneurship program at the time. Basically, we were put into groups, and we did the work to start up a new business. That includes marketing, financials  ̶  everything that goes into getting started.”

Today, Thordarson and RBC’s specialized Indigenous Markets team works closely with First Nations Chiefs and Councils, and their finance people, including accountants and auditors.

Thordarson takes pride in helping his own people and contributing to the success of First Nations communities. He understands the challenges faced by these communities and uses his expertise to empower Indigenous clients, helping them navigate financial growth and create opportunities for prosperity.

The Soup Cook-off: A Culinary Showcase

RRC Polytech’s involvement in the Soup Cook-off was a standout feature of the festival. As a main sponsor, RRC Polytech showcased the talents and skills of its Culinary Arts program. This event was not just a competition but a celebration of flavours and a demonstration of culinary expertise. The cook-off attracted over 200 visitors, offering them a taste of unique and delicious soups. This provided excellent exposure for the campus and highlighted the culinary program’s capabilities and creativity.

Students from RRC Polytech’s First Year Basic Food Prep course, supported by Chefs Jordan Carlson, Jean-Marc Blanc and Gordon Bailey, pulled an impressive second-place win.

In the culinary program, soup is an important teaching tool because it encourages the learning of many different techniques, such as roasting, sautéing, thickening by vegetable, garnish making, knife skills, and stock making, as well as the bulk production of an item.

Holiday Crafternoon: Fostering Creativity and Culture

The Holiday Crafternoon activities, sponsored by RRC Polytech, were a highlight for many festival-goers. These crafting sessions included wreath making and snowflake beading, offering a blend of traditional and modern crafts. These activities were fun, engaging, and educational, highlighting RRC Polytech’s commitment to promoting cultural awareness and artistic expression. The Crafternoon successfully brought together the community, students, and faculty to celebrate creativity and holiday spirit.

RRC Polytech’s Impact on Holiday Alley

RRC Polytech Interlake Campus’s involvement in Holiday Alley went beyond sponsoring events. The participation in these activities greatly contributed to the Festival’s success. By engaging with the community through culinary arts and crafts, RRC Polytech displayed its role as an integral part of the Selkirk community and its cultural events.

We eagerly anticipate what the City of Selkirk will bring to Holiday Alley in the future.

Health Care Aide

Join the front lines of Manitoba’s health-care system, helping to keep our neighbours and communities safe.

Develop the knowledge and skills you need to become a health care aide, helping people remain independent while receiving care and treatment. Under the supervision of a nurse, you’ll assist hospital patients, personal care home residents or home care clients with daily activities and their physical, emotional and social needs. Help others live with dignity and independence.

Plumbing

Turn your experience into expertise and solve practical problems.

Build the practical knowledge and technical skills you need to safely install and repair water and waste disposal systems and plumbing fixtures and lay out sanitary drainage, venting and storm drainage systems. You’ll also develop practical mathematics and sciences skills and gain experience with plumbing code, rigging and material handling.

Administrative Assistant

Carpentry 

The Carpentry program provides students with knowledge of woodworking machines, blueprint reading and sketching, safe working practices and a familiarity with the materials and procedures needed to enter related occupations.  

During this five-month certificate program students will learn the safe and proper use of hand and power tools and woodworking machines. Also, they will develop practical skills in framing, roofing, and surveying and have some exposure to concrete form construction.

Health Care Aide

In this 20-week certificate program that offers a 240 hour (six week) clinical practicum, students will study related topics including interpersonal communications, growth and development, gerontological care, and home care.
